Description The shell is a deep green coloring, often blended with yellow, red, or brown streaks. Inside the shell is iridescent. The mature male shellfish have a creamy-white color, the female apricot to orange colour. GreenshellTM mussels are found only in New Zealand and are one of the world's most successful farmed mussels. New Zealand’s aquaculture industry has built its reputation on seafood produced in a clean safe environment and leads the world in its quality management programmes. Our food safety programmes are considered one of the most robust in the world. NEW ZEALAND WATER QUALITY Many shellfish such as mussels are filter feeders, meaning they literally filter their food from the sea water by pumping the water through their gills. A typical mussel filters 360 litres or 80 gallons of water each day. As a result it concentrates any micro organisms, chemicals or toxins present in the environment. To ensure food safety both shellfish and water are monitored for biotoxins, bacteria and heavy metals. Each year the New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel industry collect and test tens of thousands of individual water and shellfish samples. Our testing officers are on the water throughout the year and the programme operates365 days a year in our 26 delivery centre regions. No product can be harvested off our farms without confirmation that growing water testing, rainfall monitoring, and product testing has cleared it as safe. TRACEABILITY New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel products are highly traceable. Any packaged product in the market can be traced. We can readily identify when the product was harvested, who harvested it and who the processor was and when it was processed. We can trace our New Zealand product right back to the time it was seeded out as a juvenile mussel and can trace events that occurred in the water during the growing cycle. PROCESSING SAFETY New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels are processed to the highest food hygiene standards. New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel processing plants are regularly audited by the USFDA, the European Union, New Zealand government agencies and other foreign country food safety regulators. All parts of the processing operation are examined for hazards and records are kept at each critical control point identified. Under USFDA regulations all seafood processors in New Zealand who export to the United States are required to operate under the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point(HACCP) programme.
